Are Car Insurance Firms Biasing Insurance?

Has your car insurance premium suddenly spiked? If so, then you would be shocked to discover the reason why. Turns out that some car insurance companies have resorted to increasing premiums according to certain details such as a consumer’s email providers. This is according to information revealed by a recent investigation carried out in the United Kingdom.

Secret tactics

As a matter of fact, the probe unearthed that hundreds of pounds were being slapped on people’s bills for seemingly minor information such as the number of children that one has, their birthplace, as well as their marital status.

Car premiums today are individually based according to different factors. However, in the United Kingdom, one’s email address and even their name can result in a difference in the premium that they will be paying

In fact, in one special case, two inquiries regarding cover that were identical in every manner, but only had the surnames different, resulted in a whopping 1300 pound disparity in terms of quotes.

Moreover, even the simple process of using a Gmail address rather than a Hotmail one to make an application resulted in a massive gap of 391 pounds!

Investigation results

According to investigators, car insurance firms utilize random information from claims done by past customers in order to determine the most ‘suitable’ premiums for recent ones. Hence, if they have had past experiences with people holding certain names, nationalities, email providers, or domestic set-ups with a higher frequency of accidents as compared to others, then they automatically bump up the cost for applications with similar features.

The investigation, which was carried out by Supershoppers, a Channel 4 show, went over numerous car insurance quotes. They dealt with each and every question in a similar manner, the only difference being that they changed a minor detail here and there. For example, one of the applications with the name David Ledwell was quoted a whopping 1369 pounds more than for that of an application with the name David Montgomery.

This difference in premiums is based on the fact that some factors can result in more accidents as compared to others, according to the car insurance data from their previous clients.

Additionally, an application holding the name Ahmed Khan experienced a higher quote of 462 pounds more as compared to one by David Smith. Moreover, it was observed that insurance quotes had a higher charge if the individual happened to have children, with one particular application experiencing 146 pounds more than the latter without children.

Discussing the details

In a statement to the show, Roger Flaxman, an insurance mediator, informed the show that today, the insurance industry relies heavily on data.

That means that if the car insurance company finds any kind of evidence that people with specific features have fewer accidents than those of certain features, then they will use it to determine the premium that one will be paying.

In addition to this, the Association of British Insurers came out with a press statement saying that there are numerous factors that are considered when it comes to determining the motor premiums that one will be paying. In fact, different things have to be taken into account because they believe that certain ‘features’ tend to make a certain consumer more risky than the other.

This, in part, is what results in a competitive market, and demonstrates why people need to be more aware of the advice and knowledge are given to them before they proceed to select a premium.
