You Won’t Believe What Russell Crowe Once Bought from Leonardo DiCaprio for $35,000

We all fall victim to impulsive buying from time to time, most of us aren’t proud to admit it but when the temptation strikes to buy that designer item you once saw on Instagram while scrolling through the feed mindlessly, there isn’t much you can do to resist the urge of doling out cash to get the over-priced item — only to end up with buyer’s remorse after you’ve bought it.

The situation becomes a lot more complicated when there is alcohol involved. How many of us have woken up to an empty wallet after a night of partying and drinking, with no recollection of where the money went?

Celebrities aren’t exempted from these embarrassing incidents either, but the only difference is that they can afford to make these reckless mistakes thanks to their fat wallets and bottomless bank accounts. Even Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe had fallen under this trap once.

Most of us usually trip to the mall or hours of online shopping are usually what we do once we decide to just splurge on usually unnecessary stuff, but if you are Russell, you go to one of the most notable actors of the generation, Leonardo DiCaprio.

In an interview with Howard Stern, the 55-year-old narrated how he doled out an easy $35,000 to buy a dinosaur skull from the “Titanic” actor, but don’t judge him just yet for his drunken woes.

It wasn’t exactly the picture you may have in mind — that he went to Leo’s place to ask for his dinosaur’s skull — rather Russell was already at his friend’s place having a drink when “The Revenant” star gave him an offer that he couldn’t simply resist.

The “Robin Hood” actor showed interest in the skull that was on the display in the living room, to which DiCaprio casually picked up the item and handed it to him.

All for the same amount he had paid himself to acquire the item — sounds like quite the bargain, doesn’t it? It wasn’t solely anchored on his ability to make sound decisions at the time, but the actor wanted the item especially for his kids.

Russell revealed that at the time, his three children, particularly the eldest, were fascinated by dinosaurs, so the offer was a done deal from the get-go as it was a great addition to their playroom. But the skull only lasted for a few short years in his possession and in 2018 he sold it in an auction “The Art of Divorce” after parting ways with Danielle Spencer.

The auction, that took place at Sotheby’s Australia after his marriage of nine years ended in divorce, included over 200 items he had acquired over the years he had spent together with his ex-wife well as memorabilia from his acting career.

Russell reportedly earned $3.7 million for that sole event that was coincidentally set up on his 54th birthday and ironically on their wedding anniversary.

Among the valuable items was a Leandro Bisiach violin from the 1980s and was used for the 2003 film Master and Commander. The item was pegged between $110,000 and $140,000.

As for the dinosaur skull, it fetched a cool $65,000, almost double what he paid for, which means his purchase eventually proved to be a good investment. Russell said he couldn’t remember what type of dinosaur that was but according to the auction house, it was a Mosasaur that was common more than 60 years ago.
